Probably because it won’t have the agility you can expect from a true Peugeot GTi and Peugeot Sport is the racing division of Peugeot, not the sports car division .
I also believe that GTis
only ever existed with a manual transmission and front wheel drive but i don't think it's the reason
.

You could get a 505 GTi with RWD and an automatic even.

Yes, you are right, i totally forgot about that one, seems like the automatic was optional .
It wasn’t even the fastest 505 as there was the turbo.
It even existed in a break version :
